This is such a common misconception it makes me cringe. Karkat is the only character who characterized matespritship as being based on pity, and Vriska basically acted like he was a moron when he did. Nobody else does that. It’s love. Karkat is just fucked up, which everyone should know by now. Further, the example of matespritship given by Hussie was Dad and Mom, who were quite clearly in love and not pity.

So I guess a more general way of stating this would be “People who can’t fucking read between the lines.”

Woah, wait, what? “Karkat is just fucked up, which everyone should know by now.”

Excuse me, I think the point of Hussie creating an ENTIRE FUCKING SOCIETY to back the personalities of these trolls were to prove that they’re ALL FUCKED UP. 

Hussie created a really genius thing when he gave the trolls a backstory. He proved that, like the humans, the trolls were a product of their society, which, as explained to us by said fucked up characters, is much more brutal and uncaring then our own. This is proved even more with Vriska’s whole “I bullied them because I felt bad for them” bit came out. 

When Hussie was having Karkat explain troll relationships, he was doing so as a medium to give us a deeper understanding as to how the trolls operated, as apposed to creating some fucked up characters that were fucked up for no reason. He did this so that we could learn to sympathize with them, and for this he’s proved to be a fabulous writer. 

What he wasn’t doing was giving you a place to “read between the lines”. He was flat out saying “this his how troll shit works”. 

And besides, who’s not to say that pity doesn’t taking on other meanings on ENTIRELY DIFFERENT FUCKING PLANETS. 

This is the part where you read between the lines: 

Hussie was using mom and dad as a means of creating an example that was easier to relate to. What proof do we have that mom and dad could have held up the same relationship outside SBURB. 

And here’s a thought for you. What if, JUST WHAT IF, after meeting in SBURB, Mom and Dad got together and thought:

“Wow, I pity you because you and your son have been separated and are fighting for you lives.”

“Wow, I pity you because you and your daughter have been separated and are fighting for your lives.”

“Just like me.”

You know, I honestly should have just submitted a post to this blog along the lines of “I hate it when people force the cultural standards of the humans on the trolls because that’s obviously what Hussie was trying to prove to us.” but that probably would’ve gone against their “don’t be a dick” rule.
